This article guides you on how to extend the duration time for displaying captions onscreen. If captions are flashing on and off the screen too quickly, you can choose to set a minimum hang time for the caption.
Be conservative when setting the minimum hang time value: each caption will be displayed on the screen for a duration of at least the value entered. If the speaker is a fast talker, they may be on to the next caption before the hang time expires, causing the next caption to come in slightly late. If the speaker continues to talk faster than the minimum hang time, captions will fall out of sync with the media.
Setting the Minimum Caption Hang Time:
- If making a new submission, just click the Advanced Settings, on the New Captioning Submission page; if making a Redo, go to Status of Submissions, and click the AST ID link for the request you want to Redo. Choose Click here to Redo and click the Advanced Settings.
- From the Advanced tab, choose a value from the Minimum Caption Hang Time drop-down list.
- Click the Apply Changes button; or Apply Changes to Redo button, if making a Redo. When you have all the options set up, make your request; or click the Submit Redo button, if making a Redo.
If you get a warning message like this: "Warning: MinHangTime too long! Caption #564 pushed past file end", after completing the captioning process on your media file, you may want to consider a smaller minimum hang time.
If you're using the Redo feature, and need to make other changes, you should follow the instructions available at our complete tutorial on the Redo feature.
