CaptionSync accepts a variety of media files for Closed Captioning. This article shows how to use VLC to transcode your files into a different format. This is especially useful if your media file uses a non-standard codec and you need to convert it to a standard one, so that our system can process your request. VLC comes in both PC and Mac versions, and it's free. You can download and install VLC from their website.

Converting a Video file to the MP4 format:
- Launch VLC, and go to Media -> Convert/Save:
- Click Add, to browse for the media file. Then, click Convert/Save:
- Choose the target format from the Profile drop-down menu. If you wish to transcode your video to the MP4 format, choose the H.264/MP4 option.
- Choose the destination folder for the converted file, and finally click Start:
Bulk converting several Video files to the MP4 format:
- Launch VLC, and go to Media -> Convert/Save:
- Click Add, to browse for the media files. Then, click Convert/Save:
- Choose the target format from the Profile drop-down menu. If you wish to transcode the videos to the MP4 format, choose the H.264/MP4 option. Since it's not possible to choose the destination folder, the files will be saved into the folder where the original ones are located. So check the Append '-converted' to filename box, to ensure the original media files are not overwritten. Finally, click Start:
